How To Tune In to Your Deepest Self

By: Eleanor Haspel-Portner, Ph.D.
One of the tools I use involves replaying stories. I always look at stories to learn how they relate to an individual’s internal world and how the stories affect their life and life events. In addition, I look at stories parents tell their children about their lives. Each person has their own “spin” on each family member and their impact or role on/in these events and situations.

Your role in such “tales” reveals a great deal about the issues you are dealing with and how they operate in your manifesting life. Grasping this concept and then having the experience of “ah ha” go along with it, changes your subconscious in a deep way. It allows new manifestations in your day-to-day life.

Pay attention to looking at your life’s stories to gain a new sense of empowerment within. Change yourself and you change the other. Change yourself and your life gains momentum in new ways. Ask, “What would I like to have happen now?”

It is generally important to recognize your inner “gut” responses. Note when your “gut” responses are clearest. This is when they are most likely to be relied on to move you toward action. Be forewarned: there is a lag time between stirrings in your subconscious mind and their manifestation world, i.e., it takes time for intentions to manifest in reality.

Because we are living at a very tricky astrological time with strong cosmic forces that pull and push you a lot, be mindful that you always operate on two axes of awareness. These components integrate in your functioning Self; one axis of awareness is the axis of body/mind/instincts. The other axis of awareness is the axis of feelings/mind/instincts. Each awareness axis has its own links and characteristics.

The body/mind/instincts operate primarily out of your body’s survival instinct with the imperative to care for your body and the survival of the group necessary for your survival. For example, mothers relate to their young out of this caretaking instinct from which the body operates automatically. Babies and young children also operate out of this axis, often interpreting information that idealizes their caretakers rather than recognizing their own unique individual responses. This adaptation supports their receiving care.

The mirror axis exists on the feeling side of your consciousness. On the axis of the body/feeling/instincts, intimacy and need for belonging to a group on an emotional level of gratification that confirms self-esteem builds cognitive images from which you interpret your interactive responses. In early years, such responses may be modified based on needs fulfilled or not fulfilled by caretakers and others of emotional importance. Your task is always to recognize and discern your storied truth from the truth of reality.

By recognizing these two axes of response activation within yourself, and by understanding the relationship these axes have to the images, interpretations, and behavior you manifest in the world, you can reframe information and allow new ways of being to emerge that are congruent in a unique, authentic way for yourself. Remember that you are a unique individual. You determine how you live, the story you tell, and how you relate to others. Be your best self by tuning in to your deepest Self.

Take time to mediate daily so you are able to find a quiet place within from which to express your true self. Start with the question, “And what do I know about _________ now?” Let your inner life inform your outer actions. Be still and let your higher self come through.
