Honoring Steve Jobs (1955-2011)
By: Eleanor Haspel-Portner, Ph.D.
My reaction this week when I learned of Steve Jobs death was profound and a bit unexpected. I experienced an incredibly deep sadness and loss on a vast indescribable collective level. About the only thing I could do in that moment was to jump into my pool and swim endlessly, lap after lap, reviewing the shifts I attribute in my own consciousness to the work of this one human being.
Years ago, I remember talking to my mother, who was then in her 80's, and wondering what innovations in my lifetime would be as profound a shift in my world as the automobile and airplane were in her world. I wondered about similar things with my mentor and friend Katherine de Jersey who was also quite a number of years my senior. We all wondered and imagined and could not yet envision. Now I know. Steve Jobs brought technology to life, changing my life and consciousness in incredible ways.
Steve Jobs with his innovative visions changed the consciousness, lives, and connections we have with each other in incredible and inspiring ways. Communication is no longer dependent on physical proximity. Vistas of imagination have taken flight. I am so grateful to have been part of the early Apple experience, as a passionate Apple user and fan from the first appearance of its computers.
Several months ago, my eldest sister was quite ill. Always one to shun computers and technology, she agreed to'try' an iPad. The iPad opened new vistas and worlds of communication to her in ways that never would have been possible without it. She and I played Scrabble daily, staying in touch throughout every day. We called each other using Face time and my sister got to visit with my family and with me. In fact, at one point, when she had a medical question, we used Face time so Marvin could look at her directly and advise her about how to communicate with her on-site doctor.
is not the only way Steve Jobs influenced my life. In recent times, I have watched his 2005 Stanford Commencement address multiple times, have studied his presentation style, and I have learned and taken in the principles of his legacy — do what you love and love what you do to live fully. Let go of those things that you do not love and be in the now. Stand for what you know to be true for you. Follow your dreams.
Maybe one of the reasons I am so touched and moved by this man and his vision is that he lived courageously and fearlessly. He stood up for and honored what he knew to be right from the Divine level of his inner Self. Living from the Divine and standing firm on that core of Self is the only path that leads to self-realization and transformation. It is a principle close to my heart and one I have honored throughout my own life. Twists and turns of fate challenged me, but staying true to the core of myself has always been essential to my Soul. Steve Jobs had the courage to live this principle. Apple stands for this vibration.
Steve Jobs, and Apple, are an inspiration to us all.
Over the next several weeks, I will be making some announcements about changes in my work and how I do it. Stay tuned.
